A great day’s training

Charlie and Mona Vial, Tir Conaill, with instructor Gary Marshall

The weather really does make or break club activities on the beach, and today it made it.  The new jumps were shining in the sun and the surface was great for the dressage and show jumping training.  There were young horses, experienced horses and all levels of riders.  Some horses and riders had a good look at the ‘scary’ new fillers, but in the end everyone was gliding over nicely.

Mary McMahon, Benbulben

The ground was also great for the cross country and there was a good variety of jumps for everyone.  Back at the beach, we got the jumps back on the trailer just as the tide crept over the rocks.

Keary Smyth, Anne Chambers, Carmel Ferry and Libby Carton

It was a long day, but well worth it.  Thank you to Gary Marshall, Grainne McGarry and Dympna Lonergan and members of Letterkenny, Tir Conaill, Benbulben and Donegal Gaeltacht for making it a great day!

The Advanced Primary class at Sunday’s X-Jump went to Tommy, the only competitor with a clear round that day.  Rosaleen was second with a faster time of 4 min. 30 sec., but 5 penalties.  Laura took the Intermediate and Above class with a time of 3 min. 40 sec. and 5 penalties.  Ailbhe and Laura took the Mixed Pairs class in 4 min. 50 sec. and 15 penalties, just ahead of Carmel and Tommy on 4 min. 62 sec. and 15 penalties.  There were a few tight turns on the course, but it was all perfectly doable and great craic.  It was a good practice run for the club before our inter-club show on Sunday 1st July.  Well done and thanks to everyone involved.

Yesterday evening’s weather was perfect for our equestrian activities and we were able to build the show jumping course on grass for the first time this year.  We had a good turnout too: Liz, Ryan, Laura, Rudy, Mickey, Carmel, Manus, Roisin, Tommy and Packie.  Trish instructed us over the course.  Liz and Ryan were just there for the cross country and seemed to be having great fun.

The show jumping on grass was good practice for Laura and Rudy who will be doing it again at the Riding Clubs’ Festival on 8th and 9th June.  Laura and Mickey, members of our RDS team, were showing us how it was done and Laura had perfect control over the jump-off course and won the trial jump-off easily.  Packie went first and was very happy with his time of 30.4 seconds, but he just couldn’t believe that Carmel managed it in 29.7 seconds.  Laura, off course, was around 24 seconds, from what I remember.  Killy was having none of it and had some very unusual jumps over no.5, to say the least!  It was all good practice and well worth taking part in.  Some members then headed around the cross country course to finish off.  By the time we put away all the show jumps light was fading and we went away happy, although Manus does need a new skull cap!

Another successful evening

Everyone went home happy this evening.  Rosaleen, Liz, Ryan, Ailbhe and Roisin all had different goals of this evening’s cross country schooling.  In the end, we all achieved or exceeded our expectations.  It was a lovely evening to top it off.

A few photos towards the end:

Alternative Cross Country Schooling

With most of us arriving in nice, dry weather before midday, everything looked set for a good day’s schooling around Manus’s cross country course.  Whilst walking the course, though, the heavens opened.  We waited for the rain to clear with a stable management class from Mickey, though we never did find out what the WD40 or that piece of baler twine was for.  We then enjoyed the delicious soup and warm bread originally intended for post-jumping wind-down.  When the rain did eventually clear, it was decided that the ground was too wet to continue there.  Instead Ailbhe, Carmel, Anne, Roisin, John, Stephen, Packie, Tommy, Manus and Mickey mounted and headed for Ballyconnell, and after a good round of schooling didn’t mind too much when the heavens opened again.  Packie should know by now that telling Mickey to ‘take it easy’ has the opposite effect, and there was no time wasted in getting back to Manus’s!

We’ll be keeping a good eye on the weather forecast, so be prepared to head back to Manus’s at short notice.
