The next meeting of the Donegal Clubs is on Tuesday 21st May at 8pm in Tir na nOg bar, Letterkenny. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas they want brought to the meeting, feel free to contact Lawrence, Patricia (Donegal Clubs Co-ordinater), Rachael or Ruth who are all on the committee or if anyone wants to, they’re welcome to attend.
Our next Club meeting will take place on Wednesday 22nd May at 8:30pm in Ostan Loch Altan, Gortahork. This meeting will be used to plan out the preparations for the beach show so attendance is highly recommended as, if you are not there, you will definitely be given a job for the day!!
With the Dressage Qualifiers behind up, the club’s focus now turns to the Team Show Jumping Qualifier for the RDS on Sunday in Sligo. There are 24 teams competing on the day with 8 teams representing Donegal. We will have 3 teams from the club with Letterkenny and Inihsowen each having 2 teams and Tirconaill with 1 team – with such a good turnout from the County we should hopefully do quite well! Benbulben have the largest turnout of the day with 6 teams entered. Our teams are as follows:
Rosaleen Harkin and Santa Cruz Lady
Ruth Mc Crossan and Sioux Indian
John Mc Daid and Ray Lady
Trish Warren and Colourado Kid
Carmel Ferry and Pepe Lad
Packie Ferry and Clonmany Girl
Laura Schneider and Chloe Lass
Trish Warren and He’s a Dandy
Carla Mc Ginley and Action
Mickey Mc Hugh and Simply Mitch
John Mc Daid and Smithy Breeze
Laura Schneider and Tameara
The course is open for inspection at 11 am with the Parade of Teams starting at 12. Jumping is expected to start at 12:30pm. Hopefully there will be good weather and a good turnout of supporters from the club! Best of Luck to everyone!!
As you begin to make the long journey down the country for a competition, you can’t help but wonder if it’s actually worth it. Yesterday proved for the club that it was most definitely worth the effort!
The day kicked off for our club with the Advanced Primary riders. This was the largest class of the day with 27 entries. Rudy and Dandy had a very impressive score of 76.47% which left them in 4th place, qualifying for the National Dressage Championships in Mullingar in August. On his second ride of the day, his own horse Boysie, he earned a score of 73.52% which left the pair in 10th place. Anne and Banshee rode their best ever test coming out with a fantastic score of 75.29% leaving them in 7th place overall. Ruth brought Socks out from a three year sabbatical and the pony proved he’s still got it with a score of 72.35% leaving them in 11th place!
Rachael was the only Intermediate rider from the club and her and Rodger came out with a great score of 72.85% in this hotly contested class, leaving them in 4th place, also qualifying for the National Championships!
Tricia and Laura represented the club at Open level and took the first three spots in this class. Tricia and Dandy rode to victory with a score of 81.53% (and oh my god their halt-talk about perfection!!!) and Tricia took second place on Colourado with 80.38%. Laura who had just finished her exams the day before and travelled down that morning rode a beautiful test on Layla, coming in 3rd with a score of 77.69%.
The team of Tricia, Laura, Rudy and Anne (or Team Bottom Spec as they are now affectionately known!) came second in the team competition with a team average of 78.18% which means they have now qualified for the National Championships. Our second team of Tricia, Rachael, Rudy and Ruth came 4th with a team average of 75.96% and just missed out on qualifying.
Not to be outdone, Lawrence and Merribelle showed everyone how it was done in the Advanced Primary show jumping, fighting off competitors from all over the region to take first place and the red ribbon back to Donegal! Tricia and Laura proved their talents do not lie solely in the dressage arena winning the Advanced Intermediate and Advanced Open show jumping respectively.
Everyone did so well down in Galway and really did the club proud! Considering they were facing competiton from all over the region, everyone placed in the top 11, really really impressive for a small club all the way from Donegal! Roll on August and the National Championships in Mullingar!
Best of luck and safe journey to Tricia, Laura, Anne, Rudy, Rachael, Ruth and their drivers/supporters who are travelling to the regional qualifier for the National Dressage Championships in Galway this weekend.
Letterkenny have announced the new date for their previously postponed Derby and Dressage show. The show will now take place on Sunday 30th June.

Unfortunately due to the torrential rain last night and with more forecast in the following days, Letterkenny RC have made the decision to postpone their Derby & Dressage show which was scheduled to take place this Sunday, 12th May. A new date has not been organised yet but will be announced as soon as it is.
With less than 4 weeks to go, the schedule has now been finalised for our Beach Show which will be held on Sunday 2nd June at Ballyness Bay, Falcarragh. There will be Clear Round jumping, individual graded jumping classes and novelty jumping classes for Primary/Adv Primary and Intermediate & Above. There will also be Dressage classes for all grades. There is a special price of €20 for Showjumping, Dressage and Novelty class. Stabling is available for free on a “first come, first served” basis, contact Roisin on 087-9180008 to book. We hope to have a good turnout from all clubs and hopefully Lawrence will do enough praying in the run up to the show to guarantee us good weather!
Letterkenny Riding Club have now released the schedule for their highly anticipated Derby and Dressage Show. It will take place on Sunday 12th May at Hillsborough Farm, Ramelton – earlier than previous years in a hope to boost entries. This is a great days fun and competition and, being close to home, will hopefully attract a large number of competitors from all five of the Donegal Clubs. It’ll be a great opportunity for the club to try and get their hands on some of the coveted silverware up for grabs and with pairs novelty classes for both Primary/Adv Primary and Intermediate and above, and Dressage classes for all grades, it is guaranteed to be a great day out! Both jumping and Dressage begin at 11:30am sharp and you can enter all three (jumping, dressage and pairs) for the bargain price of only €30! This show requires a huge amount of work to pull off, similar to our beach show, so we should all endeavour to attend and compete to show our support for our neighbouring club! Tricia will be judging the jumping, I wonder how she feels about brown envelopes…
Below are the results from Sunday’s Northwest Team Challenge – by all accounts it was a great days competition! Congratulations to Inishowen on winning the Show Jumping and Letterkenny for winning the Dressage. Well done to our own club on coming second in the Dressage and fourth in the Show Jumping! Roll on next year!!
